A six-week-long lecture series presented via Zoom by an expert in the field (David R. Lipovitch, PhD) with 30 years of public lecturing experience. Each lecture is two hours long and will be recorded for those who cannot attend the lecture live. Recordings will be available for twenty-four hours from the time of the lecture.
Ancient Israel is the setting of the events of the Tanakh/Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, a document whose stories are behind the core beliefs of modern Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The archaeology of Israel has been driven for more than a century by the adage "a spade in one hand and a Bible in the other." Over the last few decades, thanks to improvements in archaeological methods, we have been able to uncover more of the remains from the Biblical Era and better interpret their nature. As a result, while it has shown us that the Hebrew Bible is not entirely a book of fictional stories and parables, it also has shown us that there is much that was edited out by the authors of the Hebrew Bible. Learn what archaeology shows us is real and what is likely fictional in the stories by examining the finds made over the last two centuries in the region.
