A six-week-long lecture series presented via Zoom by an expert in the field (David R. Lipovitch, PhD) with 30 years of public lecturing experience. Each lecture is two hours long and will be recorded for those who cannot attend the lecture live. Recordings will be available for twenty-four hours from the time of the lecture.
One of the most illuminating aspects of the archaeological record is the art left behind by ancient cultures. This online lecture series will introduce students to the art of the most important cultures of the ancient Near East including that of Egypt, Mesopotamia (Sumer, Assyria, and Babylon), Canaan, and Anatolia (Hittites and Syro-Hittites). Through the study of ancient art, one can not only learn about their sense of esthetics but also many other aspects of their culture and politics. Subjects covered will include the tomb of Tutanhkamun, Neo-Assyrian palace reliefs, NeoHittite sculpture, and the Megiddo Ivories.
